Venice Beach

We have decided to take the first flight out of NY and make the most out of the day, our calculation was simple, with traveling West we will gain 3 hours and we will be able to have a super long day! And indeed, the day was super long, pleasant and exhausting in the same time!

We flew out with the 6am flight, and reached LA at 9am local time, after spending some time in the car rental department, we settled on a nice car that will fit us all with our luggage’s and will still look nice for a LA VACAY!!

Instead of heading to our airbnb location, we have decided not to waste our precious time of the first vacation day, so we changed routes and we were heading straight for VENICE BEACH!!

What a beautiful experience this was!

Known for its bohemian, Free-spirited style, Venice Boardwalk is the site of funky shops, street performance and colorful murals. Take your time to enjoy the diversity of the different souvenir shops along the boardwalk, enjoy the delicious ice cream stands or the adorable little coffee shops.

Miles of paved boardwalk makes this hot spot excellent to explore by hike or by bike, make sure to wear comfortable shoes if you plan hiking as you will be surprised how long the boardwalk stretches.

Venice Canals ~ Walk Europe

I would highly recommend making the short distance walk from Venice beach to discover this unknown fabulous historic spot called Venice Canals.

Venice canals is a quiet residential area built around canals, where every house has its own design, style, decoration and atmosphere. Each house has a dock and a private front porch.

The area is connected by picturesque bridges where you can post for breath taking pictures.

You will see motor boats and pedal boats floating calmly down the canals. People strolling the pathway next to the canals and inhaling the calm and beautiful scenery.

This is the closest place you could get to feel Venice of Italy in the United States (well, after the venetian hotel in Las Vegas).

Take your time to discover and enjoy this neighborhood. I would recommend to be there at least an hour and to walk around all the little streets and bridges, as every house, street or block has their own beauty.

This is a area that should be discovered by foot.

I have attached a map of the area.

A little history of Venice Canal

Venice of America was founded by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney in 1905 as a beach resort town. When Venice of America opened on July 4, 1905, Kinney had dug several miles of canals to drain the marshes for his residential area and bring a taste of Venice to America.  In 1924 the city decided it needed more roads and most of the canals were filled in to pave them. After lots of court hearings from the residents about whether or not it was legal to fill them in, the Supreme Court ruled it was in 1928. By the end of the year, almost all of the canals were gone, save the ones that are still here to this day.

It was said that the remaining canals were saved by the Depression and the contractor’s bankruptcy. But in truth, the area, which was only half developed, wouldn’t have supported much housing, and the lack of need for more roads saved the remaining canals.

In 1992 the canals were renovated to make them more attractive and safer , and it became slowly but surely an amazing destination for anyone that visits Los Angeles.

Today Venice Canals is a hidden gem in California, it attracts lots of tourist all year long.

Heading to Los Angeles? Make sure to stop by this neighborhood. You will be pleasantly surprised!
